A Weekend with Friends

January 31, 2013
In Eat Pray Love, Liz Gilbert explains how everyone has four spiritual brothers that represent a balanced life: intelligence, strength, poetry (or creative pursuit), and friendship. I spend a lot of time focusing on my dreams of moving to Japan and traveling the world. Yet life feels 100x fuller and richer when my friends share their own desires and hopes for the future. I light up like a firework with the thought, “Let’s make it happen!”

Saturday

My favorite Greek, Lena, took me out to celebrate my recent graduation. We had dinner at the Traffic Jam & Snug, then saw a play at WSU’s Hillberry Theater called Detroit. All the while we discussed the importance of spreading your wings in life.

As a youth, her dream was to break the status quo by moving to America and pursuing her education. She came here from Greece with very little money or English comprehension – and now she is an established, fluent doctorate professor. She took the big leap, and has encouraged her students to do the same.

Sunday

Had brunch with Chrissy at a breakfast nook called Sunny’s Kitchen. We got together to talk about Japan and her recent wedding engagement(!). Afterwards we went to the bookstore to browse through the wedding planning section. Those books go into so much detail; some thick volumes are dedicated to the dress alone! I have no doubt she will boil down all that material to create a beautiful, memorable ceremony. I hope to be back in town to celebrate it!

Chrissy also surprised me with belated Christmas gifts: a rain shell jacket and a cute polka-dot umbrella. It was so considerate because she understood I’m pairing down to the essentials, and this was exactly what I needed. Now I’m prepared for any monsoon that may come my way!

Monday

Laurén and I went to MJR (clap-clap-clap) to see the movie Silver Linings Playbook, and then grabbed hot chocolates at a coffeeshop.

In A Moveable Feast, Ernest Hemingway describes living in Paris and hanging around other writers like James Joyce and Samuel Beckett, as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. It seems that throughout history there are people on a certain level that become friends. They share some spark of insight that propels them to do great things. So they drink wine and talk philosophy and rock the world.

That’s what we are. We get it: writers who want to see the world. To achieve fulfillment from living a good life. To find balance between money and freedom. To do the one thing that makes you happy at your core: compassionately making a difference in other’s lives.

And it’s scary to grab those reigns on life and take the driver’s seat. I can just picture us having coffee in some European café far into the future, and looking back on this conversation – how we didn’t know then that we were just on the edge of embarking on our great adventures.

And so...

This past weekend, I was once again reminded how lucky I am to have such great people (more than I could mention here) to call friends who bring balance and light into my life. Thank you <3
