Kenroku-en Autumn Light-Up

兼六園
Kenroku-en

The Japanese seem to go for either stimulation overload or near-invisible subtleties. When Mr. C, Olivia, and I went down to Kanazawa for the Kenroku-en autumn light-up, we were expecting the entire park to be lit up like with twinkling, multi-colored Christmas lights. It turned out there were only some white lights hidden at the base of a few tree trunks. They highlighted the simplistic and natural beauty of the park.

The yukitsuri are ropes tied to the tree branches that help prevent them from breaking under heavy snow.

Puri-kura a photo booth that enlarges your eyes and smoothes out your skin, then let's you doodle all over the photos before they're printed.

After the light-up, we headed to Katamachi (Kanazawa's downtown neighborhood) to get our photos taken with puri-kura. Puri-kura is a photo booth that enlarges your eyes and smooths out your skin, then let's you doodle all over the photos before they're printed.

It's really funny for foreigners to use this since we already have larger eyes, and we often come out looking like aliens... gorgeous aliens, that is! Check out the end result:

Yes, that one photo's subtitle is "what does the fox say?" I guess we're not so disconnected from American pop culture, eh?
